abortion

The antiabortion factions seek to use government power to force their own moral values on the private lives of others. Those on the other side have failed to develop an effective movement to explain why abortion is fundamentally fair. The progressive response was an abstract defense of individual autonomy that winds up sounding hedonistic, along with hairsplitting distinctions about when human life begins. This may be ok for the courts but it does not persuade ordinary people. In the early 1990s, Judge Ginsburg (now a Supreme) urged that Roe be defended as a matter of necessity in order to permit women to function equally in the society.
