Active verbs (developers, take note!) -- specific results
Relate to job performance, students' personal objectives (vs. the course objectives -- this can sting you on the evals)
Get buy-in

Prerequisites, e.g. text editor skill for a programming class
The style of the course: interactive with plenty of exercising and tests
Timing of the labs, tests, etc.: when they will be given, how long, how significant
Expectations: homework and reading assignments
Starting and ending times, breaks and meals, location of bathrooms
Materials: student guide, textbook, hardware
