Sysadmin Setup Instructions for Java Jumpstart

To the Classroom System Administrator --

The course materials are on our web server for access via web browsers.
We also provide printed copies of content pages and instructions for lab assignments.
Appropriate hardware and software is necessary for our labs, exercises, and demos to work.

Many thanks for your support!

Classroom Hardware and Software Requirements

  • a PC or workstation for each student (Unix, Windows 95, or Windows NT)
  • a PC or workstation for the instructor
  • a data projector for the instructor's computer
  • a web browser on each computer
  • a working internet connection on each computer
  • any text editor, preferably one with line numbering
  • DOS or shell command windows available on every computer
  • the Java Development Kit (JDK) version 1.1 or later (from java.sun.com) installed on each computer
  • the JDK binaries must be in a directory that's in the PATH variable
  • the JDK documentation must be installed in the JDK directory
  • for NT systems, the WinZip utility should be available for unpacking class archives and the JDK itself (Sun delivers the JDK for NT in WinZip format)
  • to reduce time spent waiting for downloads, a shared volume, writable by the instructor and readable by the class, is recommended

What if there is no internet connection?

If there is no internet connection, please install the documentation for the core Java API, as it will not be possible to view it online from the Javasoft website. You'll also have to use the bin/sedscript.ksh script to modify the paths in the links on all the HTML pages, to point to the local documentation directory. Let us know if you do not have an internet connection so that we can prepare accordingly.

We hope this makes sense!
